Özet

The national identity in Azerbaijan is shaped by the special position of the region in which Azerbaijan is located and by the special conditions created by the Azerbaijani people, especially during the last 200 years of historical process and became a unique identity. The purpose of this research is to reveal the basic elements of contemporary Azerbaijani national identity based on the textebook 'Fatherland' which is studied at the 5th classes of the general education schools in Azerbaijan. The "general survey model" and "document review" methods were used in the research. As a result of the research it was understood that, Turkishness. is seen as the most basic factor of the national identity although being, Azerbaijani. is accepted as inclusive upper identity appropriate with the Azerbaijan constitution, the concept of 'Azerbaijan Homeland' is used in the sense that "historical Great Azerbaijan" covering North, South and West Azerbaijani territories, sectarian differences are not seen as a determining element of national identity. Also as a result of research, it is understood that the Armenians, the Tsarist administration and the administration of the USSR are seen as "enemy'' and 'the other" in the Azerbaijani national identity, in the coursebook the historical role of M. Emin Rasulzade and the role of Ebulfez Elchibey in the process of independence of Azerbaijan is trivialized, however, Haydar Aliyev was undoubtedly presented as the founder of the new Azerbaijani state. In Azerbaijan national identity, the effective position of women in society, importance given to art, literature and knowledge and the tradition of rebellion play an important role.
