Abstract
One of the results of language studies, which has an important place in the classical period of Islamic thought, is the emergence of the science of wad'. In short, the science of wad?, which tries to explain the relationship between utterance and meaning, tried to explain how certain types of utterances are attributed to their meanings. Modern period language studies, on the other hand, are called linguistic studies. In fact, different categories of language studies are carried out under linguistics, which we can also describe as a roof science. In this context, it is seen that some researchers are trying to establish a relationship between the science of wad?, a product of classical period Islamic thought, and modern period language studies. In this study, the claims in question will be analyzed so that the equivalent of wad? science in the modern science division will be determined. For this purpose, first of all, the contents of ten works written on the science of wad? will be revealed, so that the main and secondary subjects of the science of wad? will be determined. Afterwards, it will be shown with examples of how the meanings of the types of words examined by the science of wad? are given. In the second part, brief information will be given about linguistics, lexicology, lexicography, and semiotics, which are the subject of the claim, and the similarities and differences between them and the science of wad' will be pointed out.
