Are open textbooks effective for learning? Investigating the issue of human-computer interaction in pedagogical design of open textbook affordable for a diversity of learning environments
    (IOP Publishing Ltd, 2021) Railean, E. A.; Elçi, A.; Ivanova, M.; Bîrnaz, N.; Alias, M.
This article discusses the impact of human-computer interaction in the pedagogical design of open textbooks affordable into a diversity of learning environments. An exploratory study is conducted, wherein an online questionnaire is administered to the second-year master’s degree students from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Studies. The results show that students are aware of the importance of metacognition in developing effective learning strategies. Thus, they use metacognitive strategies when taking notes, doing reflections, and employing mnemonics to enhance understanding. However, despite the current practice of using open didactical materials, students feel that the open textbooks approach needs to be relooked and changed to be more effective; it could be equipped with appropriate learning tools to provide more opportunities for immediate feedback and collaborative assessment. Individualization and collaboration are the key factors in developing metacognitive experience. These findings indicate that students are cognizant of the important role of open textbooks in promoting learning.

Digital competences for language teachers: Do employers seek the skills needed from language teachers today
(Springer, 2020) Talmo, Tord; Soule, Maria Victoria; Fominykh, Mikhail; Giordano, Antonio; Perifanou, Maria A.; Sukack?, Vilma; Novozhilova, Anna; D’Ambrosio, Roberta; Elçi, Alev
Language proficiency is essential for 21st Century skills, and for the ability to obtain and utilize new competencies in the future. Digitalization is greatly affecting the language learning settings, and more digital skills are needed amongst teachers. Thus, it is interesting to see what kind of demands the new working life puts on the future language teachers in all areas of the sector. To better understand the role of national policies on digital competence and their impact on language teacher’s recruitment, this study investigates existing strategies for digital competence for language teachers in 11 countries, and their representation in job announcements. The study uses qualitative content analysis as well as quantitative analysis represented by descriptive statistics. The former includes document analysis of strategies on different levels and gives an overview of existing trends and new tendencies considering digital skills for language teachers. The latter comprises a search and classification of 854 job announcements throughout Europe according to three levels of digital competences to see which skills are being asked for when hiring language teachers. The results indicate that there are discrepancies between strategies being implemented at overarching levels and the institutional practices. We also demonstrate discrepancies between the needs described for the 21st Century and the defined skills in the job announcements. Among other results, the study highlights the need for more targeted job announcements to attract teachers with the desired digital skills.

Performance analysis of optimization algorithms on stacked autoencoder
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019) Adem, Kemal; Kılıçarslan, Serhat
Stacked autoencoder (SAE) model, which is one of the deep learning methods, has been widely used in one dimensional data sets in recent years. In this study, a comparative performance analysis was performed using the five most commonly used optimization techniques and two well-known activation functions in SAE architecture. Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Root Mean Square Propagation (RmsProp), Adaptive Moment Estimation (Adam), Adaptive Delta (Adadelta) and Nesterov-accelerated Adaptive Moment Estimation (Nadam) and Softmax and Sigmoid were used as optimization techniques. In this study, two different data sets in public UCI database were used. In order to verify the performance of the SAE model, experimental studies were performed by using the obtained data sets together with optimization and activation techniques separately. As a result of the experimental studies, the success rate of 88.89%, 85.19% in Cryotherapy and Immunotherapy data set was achieved by using Softmax activation function with SGD optimization method on three-layer SAE. After a successful training phase, adaptive optimization techniques Adam, Adadelta, Nadam and RmsProp methods were observed to have a weaker learning process than the stochastic method SGD.

A narrative research approach: The experiences of social media support in higher education
(Springer Verlag, 2014) Elçi, Alev; Çubukçuo?lu Devran, Begüm
Narrative research is started to be used in educational context recently. This article focuses on a discussion of the reasons for choosing narrative research approach in discovering the experiences of social media usage in higher education. Moreover, the preliminary information of ongoing study is provided. The authors use this method to convey their experiences about using social media for supporting their teaching and learning outside the classroom. The increasing trend in social media usage among new generations is being used as an advantage to interact and communicate with students in 'their way'. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Mediating effect of pessimistic evaluations about the environment on the relation between learned helplessness and firms' environmental social responsibility
(MELANDRIUM, 2013) Bozkurt, Fatma Gamze; Ergeneli, Azize; Ece, Süreyya; Bakırtaş, Hülya; Loster, T; Pavelka, T
The purpose of this study is to investigate learned helplessness and pessimistic evaluations of individuals about the environment with their attitudes toward firms' environmental social responsibility behaviors. The study conducted on 125 business administration students by asking them to fill out a questionnaire, in which learned helplessness was measured by McLean, A. (2003), environmental concern were taken from Dunlap et. al. (2000) and social responsibility survey developed by Karahan (2006) were used. In order to examine the relationships between the variables linear regression analysis was conducted and to understand the mediating effects of firm's social responsibility multiple regression analysis was used. Regression results revealed that pessimistic evaluation about environment fully mediated the influence of learned helplessness on attitudes of individuals toward firms' environmental social responsibility behaviors. The implications of the study for research and practice are discussed and some suggestions are made for future research as well as the strengths and limitations of the study.
