    The topics that students are curious about in the history lesson

    The objective of this research is that, by determining the themes and subjects in history lessons that the students find interesting and are curious about, to reveal the reasons for their curiosities related to these themes and subjects. As the data collection tool, the survey that is prepared by the researches with respect to the students' essays, history lesson curriculum and the interviews with teachers is conducted; also focus group technique is applied to the respondents. The research is realized with 129 students who study in 12th class at public schools, which are in domination of Ministry of National Education, in Ankara and Aksaray. As a result, it is revealed that the students are curious about "the war theme and the subjects of the Ottoman Empire establishment period and that the students are not curious about "The History of Daily Life, World and European History in Middle Ages and Modern Times, Turkish and World History after 1938, The History of Anatolian Principilaties" subjects.

    The topics students have difficulty in understanding and learning in history course

    The aim of this research is to find out which historical themes and subjects the students have difficulty in understanding and learning and to define the reasons for them. In the research, the survey prepared by researchers who have taken students' essays, the education program of history lesson and experts' opinions as basis is used as instruments of the data collection and also focus group interview is conducted with participants. The research has been implemented with 131 students in twelfth grade of public high schools, which are affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, in Aksaray and Ankara. In conclusion, it is determined that the students find such historical themes and subjects as migration, natural disasters, daily life (or people's way of life), antiquity civilisations, the rise of Ottoman empire easy to learn. However, they have difficulty in understanding and learning such subjects as regional history, peace treaties, World and European history, Turkish and World history after 1938.     Use of learning diaries in a nature education project as an evaluation tool

    In the present study, the aim is to investigate the use of learning diaries to evaluate the contributions of the activities to the pre-service teachers carried out within the framework of the nature education project and to provide the literature with an example of using learning diaries as an evaluation tool. The study group consists of 25 pre-service teachers from 15 different universities participating in the project entitled "Nature Education Project in Ihlara Valley (Aksaray) and Its Surrounding". The project was supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). In the study, the participating students were asked to write learning diaries daily throughout the ten-day project about their daily activities. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the students' diaries. In light of the findings of the study, it was found that dairies are effective tools in the evaluation process of the nature education. It is suggested that the students should be encouraged to write learning diaries throughout their nature education.

    Social studies teacher candidates' critical thinking skills

    The purpose of this study is to determine social studies teacher candidates' critical thinking skills. This study is a survey model. The study is a descriptive field research focused on finding out interrelations. The Cornell Critical Thinking Skills Test-Level X (CCTTLX) was used to measure critical thinking skills of students. In this research, the data obtained were analyzed using t-test and ANOVA. The study group of this research is formed of 142 social studies teacher candidates studying at a state university in Turkey. The research was carried out in 2012 spring semester. At the end of this study, important information was obtained about social studies teacher candidates' critical thinking skills.

    The effects of nature education project on the environmental awareness and behavior

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the project "Nature Education in Ihlara Valley (Aksaray) and Its Surrounding Area 2010" supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) on environmental awareness and behavior. "Environmental Awareness Scale" developed by Uzun and Saglam (2005) and "Sustainability Scale" developed by Kagawa (2007) were used to collect data in the present study. The study was carried out in line with the pre-test-post-test design.. According to the results of the comparison, it can be argued that significant differences between pre-test environmental awareness (F=5.184; p<0.05) and behavior (F=15.830; p<0.01) scores and post-test scores came into being.
