Evaluation of economic structure of cherry growing in Turkey
(Springer, 2020) Gül, Mevlüt; Akpınar, Metin Göksel; Demircan, Vecdi; Bal, Tufan; Yılmaz, Hasan Hüseyin; Arıcı, Şerife Evrim; Polat, Mehmet; Acar, Musa; Örmeci Kart, Murside Çağla
Cherry production has a vital role regarding income source for producers and export sources for Turkey. In Turkey, several studies have done regarding the technical practices, and most of them were not considered the economic dimension of cherry production. This research aimed to determine the production inputs, costs and profitability of cherry production. This study aims to reveal the relationship between orchard size and profitability by using general economic calculations based on Afyonkarahisar, Denizli, Isparta, İzmir, Konya and Manisa provinces, in Turkey. It is assumed that this study may be able to close the existing gap regarding other studies in the literature to a certain extent. This study support that more prominent cherry orchards had higher profits compared to smaller. The relative profit varies between 2.2 to 3.0 in the farm size groups. In this study, it was found that relative profit is the highest in the bigger-scale orchards. The most crucial problem for producers is to achieve a profitable cherry selling price. This study found the output/input ratio is high. Orchard size and production cost have a significant influence on the economic success of a cherry orchard. Production cost has a negative influence on profitability with a low cherry yield. In other words, cherry production is profitable in the research region, but some recommendations can be made within the framework of research findings to get better.

Input use and factors affecting in potato farming in Türkiye
(University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, 2023) Gül, Mevlüt; Karlı, Bahri; Kadakoğlu, Bektaş; Şirikçi, Bekir Sıtkı; Taşçıoğlu, Yavuz; Akpınar, Metin Göksel; Yılmaz, Hilal; Acar, Musa
The study aimed to analyse the technical applications of the farmers in the production of potatoes in Turkiye and to reveal the information sources that were affected. In this framework, the provinces of Nigde, Nevsehir, Izmir, Afyonkarahisar, Konya, Adana, Aksaray and Kayseri, which constitute more than half of Turkiye's potato production, were included in the scope of the research. Data were obtained from 533 farmers by face-to-face survey technique. The average of the interviewed farms was 14.07 hectares of potato cultivation area, 62.07% of which was for rent, 35.96% was property and 2.77% was lands held in partnership. As the scale of the farms' increases, the rate of rental land for potato cultivation increases. In the region average, almost half of the potato cultivation area was grown on rented land. In addition, the average parcel size of 2.72 hectares and the number of pieces of potato planted land cause an increase in pre- and post-production costs. 71.63% of the potatoes produced on the farms were table, 23.57% industrial type and 4.80% seed. Although 44 different kinds of potatoes were grown in the region, it was determined that the farmers gave weight to Melody, Madeleine, Jelly, Marabel, and Agria varieties. Seed diversity varies according to the characteristics of the regions. Seed use per hectare in the research area was determined as 4,076.6 kg in the average of the enterprises and 3,950.0 kg in the weighted average of the region. In the average of the farms interviewed, the labour force used per hectare was 1,419.4 hours, and the average of the region was 1,940.4 hours. In potato production, machinery was used for 37.7 hours on average and 56.5 hours on average for the region. The amount of nitrogen given per hectare in the potato cultivation areas was 416.6 kg, the weighted average of the region was 497.2 kg, the phosphorus 89.7 kg, the regional weighted average 108.2 kg, the potassium 75.2 kg, the regional weighted average 86.1 kg. The irrigation system was mainly in the form of sprinkler irrigation. Farmers in the selection of seeds; expressed the factors of yield level, price, ease of sale, germination power, and resistance to diseases and pests as very important criteria. The farmers were using traditional information sources in the selection of seeds. It was determined that modern information sources and traditional information sources were equally effective in agricultural control. The farms interviewed received high scores on the level of cultural practices in an agricultural struggle. It was determined that producers were more affected by modern information sources in potato cultivation in the region. The potato was a product that uses a high level of input. In this respect, more conscious use of inputs and policies that guide farmers to modern information sources were considered important in terms of sustainability.

Marketing structures of carrot production and challenges and recommendations: The case of Konya Province, Turkey
(Parlar Scientific Publications, 2020) Acar, Musa; Gül, Mevlüt
The main objective of the study was to deter- mine the structure of marketing, problems in mar- keting and to suggest solutions to the problems of carrot marketing. Primary data used in the research were gathered through personal interviews with the help of well-designed questionnaires from 73 carrot producer farms, 30 marketing channels' actors (broker/merchants) and 10 cold storage firms in Konya, Turkey. The surveyed samples were selected randomly. The data covered 2011 production season. Carrot marketing cost was calculated to be US$0.40 per kg; distributed as 69.39% of raw mate- rials, 11.7% broker commission, 8.89% transport costs, 7.04% packing, 3.39% labour and 0.22% other cost. For the carrot production, high input costs, difficulties in finding new markets, climatic conditions and delays or even failure in payment for product, were identified as the main problems. Regarding exports, to eliminate the complications at custom offices will ensure the sustainability of existing markets; and it should help to create new markets. National or international funds to support organizations and institutions involved could be provided for improvement of the sectors.

Optimum Support Policy Component for the Development of Agricultural Production: Potato Producer
(MDPI, 2023) Taşcıoğlu, Yavuz; Gül, Mevlüt; Akpınar, Metin Göksel; Karlı, Bahri; Kadakoğlu, Bektaş; Şirikçi, Bekir Sıtkı; Acar, Musa; Yılmaz, Hilal
The present study aimed to determine the optimum policy component in an example of potato cultivation development based on the principle of the efficient use of scarce resources and maximizing the benefit of the producer. Agricultural support policies are commonly implemented by adopting a top-down approach. Regarding benefit maximization at the target group level, policies for agricultural products should be determined with a bottom-up approach. In this manner, in the present study, potato producers were determined to be the target group. Therefore, this study investigated the policy component that provides the highest benefit in line with the demands, expectations, and tendencies of the target group. The micro-data obtained from the potato-growing enterprises operating in provinces where potato cultivation was intensively carried out within the scope of Turkey constituted the research data. A face-to-face survey technique was used as the method for collecting the producer data. Simple descriptive statistics and one of the multivariate analysis techniques, conjoint analysis, were applied in the analysis and evaluation of the data. The optimum policy component setup was determined to be “Price and Payment Support: Above Market Price and 2 months term, Support Area and Amount: to production, 25.47 USD/da (23.04 EUR/da), time of announcement for the supports: pre-planting, and producer’s declaration: I do (I declare)” for the potato product. Accordingly, the necessity of a bottom-up approach in the planning and implementation of an agricultural support policy in Turkey is explained based on the results obtained. Therefore, it is considered necessary and beneficial to measure the level of producer benefits on the focus of applications that encourage potato production.
