Abstract

Fault protection is a crucial aspect of power systems, particularly in cases where faults occurring in distribution transformers can have severe implications for customers. However, it is not feasible to equip every distribution transformer with a monitoring system due to the high installation costs and the complexities associated with integrating them into the existing communication network. This study addresses this challenge by modeling the distribution network as a simplified single-phase electrical system and developing a controller that utilizes a PIC18F458 microcontroller. The primary objective of this controller is to provide both protection and onsite monitoring capabilities. Through simulation results, it has been demonstrated that the protection system, which is based on the PIC microcontroller, effectively safeguards against faults such as over-current, overvoltage, and under-voltage. This successful outcome highlights the ability of the developed system to mitigate potential hazards and ensure the reliability of the distribution transformer, benefiting the customers it serves.
