Abstract
Many Northern and Western Europeans who seek a life that offers guaranteed weather, sea, sunshine, natural beauty, positive social relationships and other advantages are choosing to spend all or part of the year on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts of Turkey. Mainly retirees either live in their own property or in rented accommodation. Some of them also purchase properties as investments. Situated on the Mediterranean coast, Alanya, a city within the province of Antalya, is the preferred destination for Germans. Germans who live in Alanya have become an interesting topic of analysis within many different fields of academic research, whether sociology, geography, international law or tourism. This research will examine the reasons why Germans prefer Alanya and the factors that influenced their decision to choose this area. The opportunities that life in Alanya can offer and the obstacles those face who have relocated there will also be examined. What form do social relationships take amongst Germans living in Alanya, between themselves and Turks, and other foreigners? What problems do they encounter when setting out to buy property, and what are the most effective solutions and methods employed to overcome these problems? What are the relevant rights of foreigners in Turkey with regard to employment and the purchase of property? What are the latest developments with regard to work permits for foreigners? What contribution do the resident Germans make to economic activity in Alanya? © Peter Lang GmbH.
