Özet
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) lies in the anterior part of the brain, constitutes a large part of the central nervous system, and is of great importance to socio-emotional and executive functions crucial to numerous cognitive abilities. This chapter discusses the use of stereological methods for determining the synaptic functions of mitochondria in the PFC region. Stereology is a field involving various methods that permits the interpretation of the three-dimensional characteristics of any three-dimensional structure based on twodimensional images. The use of electron microscopic images of PFC mitochondria (mPFC) structures provides information about the stereological Cavalieri and physical disector applications. These methods are unbiased, effective, reliable, low-cost and repeatable, and increasing repetition makes it possible to obtain results increasingly close to the true values.
