Öğe Women shaking the concept of 'men's work' in Turkey: a critıcal discourse analysis of the news reports(Ankara Üniversitesi TÖMER, 2023) Aytaç Demirçivi, KadriyeThis study explores online news discourses characterized by their unique semiotic and textual properties to unveil any discursive exclusionary or inclusionary constructions regarding women's movement to gender-atypical occupations in Turkey. Adopting the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis and macrostructural analysis of discourse (van Dijk, 1980), the study analyses a dataset of online newspapers and news portals on women working in male-dominated occupations to understand how they construct and proliferate a discriminatory or supportive attitude in shaping public attention. The findings reveal that the concept of 'men's work' is challenged in the news reports by an ironical and disbelieving tone to question the occupational gender segregation. A constructive attitude exists by an apparent focus on women's achievements in so-called 'men's work'. With respect to women's perception of their presence in gender-atypical jobs, though they acknowledge some difficulties they face, their confidence in their strength and perseverance is obvious in their narratives with a strong emphasis on keeping their femininity.Öğe Agriculture-oriented services of local governments in Türkiye(Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi, 2024) Bölükbaş, VahitIn recent years, local governments have been supporting local rural development. While in many countries such services are mostly provided by central governments, in Türkiye, in recent years, local governments have also been playing a role as stakeholders and supportive actors in agricultural activities. This study provides information on the support services provided by metropolitan governments to producers engaged in agricultural activities in Türkiye. The data processed within the study was obtained from the 2022 and 2023 annual activity reports of seven metropolitan municipalities selected as a sample from seven regions of Türkiye using the document analysis method. The present research holds, unlike implementations of the kind in the world, metropolitan municipal governments in Türkiye provide support to producers engaged in agricultural activities under various headings. While central governments in many countries provide contributions to local governments to support agricultural production in cooperation with international organisations, the present study notes that local governments in Türkiye do not benefit from these supports sufficiently.Öğe The Problem of Women's 'Absence' and Women's Representation in Local Government Assemblies: A Study on the Central Anatolia Region(Ahmet AKSIN, 2025) Bölükbaş, VahitHalf of the world population consists of women. It is seen that women are underrepresented in international, national, and local administrations since they are compressed into certain roles and moulds with general assumptions such as social, cultural, traditional, etc. It is seen that women cannot reach the representation they deserve in the administrative processes in almost all countries. Of course, there are many reasons for this situation, but no reason can explain the ‘ignoring’ of women only because of gender and the frameworks and boundaries set by others for that gender. In this study, the ‘problematic of women's absence’ in local governments is analysed through the Central Anatolia Region. The aim of the study, the data of which were accessed by using the descriptive analysis method and document analysis method based on the official data of the Supreme Electoral Council, is to describe the representation of women among the members of metropolitan, provincial and district municipal assemblies and provincial general assemblies in the Central Anatolia Region according to the results of the local elections held on 31 March 2024. In the study, the thesis that women's representation in local governments is low in metropolitan, provincial and district municipal assemblies and provincial general assemblies in the Central Anatolia Region has been tested and the data reveal that women are not adequately represented in these areas. Necessary suggestions are presented to solve the ‘problematic of absence’ of women.Öğe Online learning readiness and satisfaction in English as a foreign language at higher education context: the moderating role of engagement(Frontiers Media SA, 2025) Altınsoy, Ertan; Boyraz, SerkanWith the rapid advancement of technology and the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19, educational institutions worldwide were compelled to shift to e-learning, especially in the field of foreign language instruction such as English as a Foreign Language (EFL). While online learning environments offer advantages like flexibility, accessibility, and interactivity, challenges persist in sustaining student engagement and ensuring satisfaction. This study was prompted by low student attendance in online EFL classes at a public university in Türkiye. The primary aim was to explore the mediating role of Engagement in Online Learning (EOL) in the relationship between Online Learning Readiness (OLR) and Online Learning Satisfaction (OLS). Method: The study employed a quantitative research design, involving a sample of 945 associate and undergraduate students enrolled at a state university in Türkiye. Standardized instruments were used to measure OLR, EOL, and OLS. Data were analyzed using correlation and mediation analyses, along with tests for moderation by demographic variables such as age and gender. Results and discussion: Findings indicated a medium-level, positive, and statistically significant relationship between students’ OLR and their OLS. A strong positive correlation was also found between OLR and EOL. Furthermore, engagement (EOL) was shown to significantly mediate the relationship between readiness (OLR) and satisfaction (OLS), suggesting that students’ active participation plays a crucial role in achieving satisfaction in online learning environments. Age was not a moderating factor in the readiness-satisfaction link, whereas gender was found to have a significant moderating effect. Additionally, a moderate, positive, and significant relationship was observed between engagement and satisfaction. These results highlight the importance of fostering engagement to enhance students’ online learning experiences and outcomes in EFL contexts.Öğe 'I am a mother before anything else': An analysis through the discursive angle of Positioning Theory(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2025) Aytaç Demirçivi, KadriyeConstituting a profound change in women's being, becoming a mother might have different meanings across cultures. Utilizing the systematic analytic framework and discursive angle of Positioning Theory (Davies & Harre, 1990), this study analyzes the ideological construction of mother identity in archive of online documents with the expression 'I am a mother before anything else' in T & uuml;rkiye. Positioning analysis was applied to reveal the story lines through which women position themselves as primarily mothers and its social consequences. The findings unveil five main story lines assigning certain duties fulfilled/rejected and rights claimed/rejected by the mothers, which legitimize their actions and states of being in different contexts and in the eyes of different audiences. Emerging themes of the mothers' discourse include a high emphasis on the concept of self-sacrifice while producing their intensive mothering position and primary mother identity. Traces of emotional exploitation through overwhelmingly affectuous expressions attributed to the divinity of maternity and using motherhood as a political strategy to indicate a superiority over men also come forward as the striking findings of this study.Öğe Entrepreneurial competencies in the success of enterprises: A bibliometric analysis of the publications in the field(ACC Publishing, 2024) Koçyiğit, Nezahat; Yıldız, Esra; Akyazı, Turgut EmreThere has been an acceleration in competence-based management in recent years, which has, in turn, influenced entrepreneurial success by strengthening entrepreneurial competencies. This study aims to analyse and predict the future of the research on entrepreneurial competencies using bibliometric methods. For this purpose, VOSviewer software was used for co-word analysis. Bibliometric methods such as citation analysis and co-author analysis were used to analyse the studies related to entrepreneurial competencies. It was found that most publications were published in 2019 based on a search in the Web of Science database between 1995 and 2023. The analysis of 1403 publications revealed that 460 proceeding papers, 10 early access and 210 book chapters were involved in the search. After reducing the set to include articles, 914 papers were evaluated. Results show that the authors most cited over the years are Lans Thomas, Al Mamun Abdullah, Mulder Martin, and Obschonka. Furthermore, it was found that Spain had the highest number of published works, followed by China and the USA respectively. Study findings also revealed that entrepreneurial competencies are more related to core, emotional, and network competencies and sustainable development, creativity, innovation, social capital, and higher education.Öğe Girişimcilik yönelimi ve dijital okuryazarlığın girişimcilik niyetine etkisi: İİBF öğrencileri üzerinde bir araştırma(Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam Üniversitesi, 2024) Akyazı,Turgut EmreThis study was conducted in order to reveal whether the entrepreneurial orientation and digital literacy of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences students have an impact on entrepreneurial intention. For this purpose, data was collected from 956 undergraduate students studying in the departments of Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Political Science and Public Administration, International Relations and Management Information Systems at a state university. As a result of the analyses, it was observed that the entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial intention and digital literacy levels of students who had taken entrepreneurship courses were higher than those of students who had not taken entrepreneurship courses. Another important result of the study is that entrepreneurial orientation and digital literacy together had a positive and significant effect on entrepreneurial intention.Öğe What digital competency tells us about e-learning satisfaction of pre-service teachers(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2024) Boyraz, Serkan; Rüzgar, M. EmirIt is imperative that pre-service teachers gain digital competency (DC) as a result of their education where e-learning is a central component. In this study, we aimed to describe pre-service teachers' perceived DC and e-learning satisfaction (ELS) levels, to examine how their perceived DC and ELS change in terms of related variables and to investigate how perceived DC predicts ELS. To inform their policy decisions, teacher training institutions and more generally HEIs must have a clear understanding of this relationship as it will allow them to decide whether to invest in e-learning platforms or in enhancing pre-service teachers' perceptions of DC. Utilising a quantitative research understanding, we collected data from 402 students in various teaching programs at a Faculty of Education. Findings indicated that pre-service teachers report a high level of perceived DC and moderate level of ELS while we ascertained a low level of predictive relationship between the two variables. We suggest that policymakers prioritise investing resources in improving DC of pre-service teachers in order to have them higher levels of ELS to increase the quality of their education.Öğe Digital literacy and moral values in the digital environments: Secondary students' Perceptions(Brock University, 2024) Altınsoy, Ertan; Boyraz, SerkanThis paper examines secondary school students' perceptions of moral values in the digital environments (MVDE) and digital literacy (DL). The study used a quantitative methodology and correlational survey design encompassing 250 participants. Results show that participants' perceptions of DL are mostly high, while their perceptions of MVDE are mostly intermediate. Gender is not a source of significant difference in terms of either DL or MVDE. While grade is not a variable affecting DL, lower grades have statistically significant higher values in terms of MVDE. Participants who use social media have significantly higher DL scores, while the difference in MVDE is not significant in terms of the same variable. Like gender, online gaming is not a source of significant difference in terms of both DL and MVDE. Daily online time is not related to a significant difference in DL; however, those who are online for more than 3 hours daily have a significantly lower MVDE than those who spend less time online. Finally, results show that MVDE and DL are positively correlated at a moderate level, and MVDE explains 19.6% of DL. To conclude, MVDE should be fostered amongst individuals as it would help them become "better" citizens in the digital world, much like moral values do in real life.Öğe Lesson Study: Does It Work for Personal Development of Pre-service ELT Teachers(Institución Universitaria Colombo Americana: ÚNICA, 2023) Altınsoy, ErtanThis study is intended to document Lesson Study experience of six preservice English language teachers studying at a state university in Turkey and investigates its impact on their personal development as prospective language teachers. The large volume of data collected through unstructured interviews, semi-structured interviews, learning journals, classroom observation records and a focus group interview during a seven-month period was subjected to thematic and categorical analysis using qualitative analysis software. The results revealed that Lesson Study intervention contributed to the personal development of the participating pre-service teachers significantly in a variety of aspects, especially in making critical teaching judgements and ensuring adaptable teaching in the classroom. The results further indicated that Lesson Study also led to the development in creative teaching, establishment of rapport with students, self-awareness, and self-confidence of the participants.Öğe ‘Tiny but Mighty’ Conversational Elements: Explicating Non-lexical Backchannels in Spoken Turkish(Dilbilim Derneği, 2023) Aytaç Demirçivi, Kadriye; Işık Güler, HaleThis paper analyzes the functions of non-lexical backchannels in the Spoken Turkish Corpus and the differences in their use in naturally formed combinatory groups of gender and age (young-middle aged-elderly). Adopting a cyclic approach in the analysis of the 2231 non-lexical backchannels from the study corpus, two main and 16 sub-functions, eight of which are unique to this study and exhibit original dimensions have been identified. Results reveal that groups with female speakers and young speakers tend to use backchannels more for ‘approving the other speaker’, whereas groups with male speakers, middle- aged and elderly speakers tend to use backchannels more for ‘continuation of the conversation’. Despite these statistical tendencies, the findings suggest that when people have more in common and more interest in the given conversational topic, they use multifunctional non-lexical backchannels to construct meaning more cooperatively, regardless of gender and age-related variables.Öğe ‘I wouldn't wish her on my worst enemy’: Discursive representation of women managers in a collaborative hypertext dictionary in Turkey(Elsevier Ltd, 2023) Aytaç Demirçivi, KadriyeCurrently regarded as ‘new publicity’, collaborative hypertext dictionaries owe their popularity to the assumption that truth might have various perspectives rather than a single explanation. Evaluated within the scope of Web 2.0 to refer to participatory culture and social networking, these online dictionaries have a noteworthy role in constructing discourses of inclusion and/or exclusion. Informed by the theory of Discourse and Ideology, this article critically examines discourse representations of women managers in an online collaborative dictionary launched in Turkey, ‘Ekşi Sözlük’. Critical discourse analysis was applied to entries whose title included kadın yönetici (women managers) to identify discursive strategies deployed in the portrayal of women managers. The findings unveil traces of online misogyny that is systematically perpetuated via a pejorative and marginalizing language that overwhelms positive depictions. Emerging themes include the perception of the presence of women managers as a threat and of their inadequacy in management on the basis of traditional gender stereotypes.Öğe Şûranın yönetimdeki yeri ve önemi: Aksaray Belediyesi Örneği(Aksaray Üniversitesi İslami İlimler Fakültesi, 2023) Dinçer, Evren; Bölükbaş, Vahitİnsanoğlu bir arada yaşamaya başladığı zamandan itibaren güvenlik, refah ve ihtiyaç temini gibi unsurları içeren toplumsal düzeni sağlamak adına yönetim kavramını hayata geçirmiştir.
