Bio-electrospinfabrication: from production to applications

Biofabrication is a technology that has the potential to emerge as the leading manufacturing paradigm of the 21st century with the contributions of engineering, biology, and materials science. Electrospinning, one of the biofabrication techniques, has arisen as a simple and cost-effective fiber-forming technology, since its discovery by Formhals in 1934. Recently, electrospun fibers have gained much attention due to their wide range of uses in diverse application fields. Especially, for manufacturing scaffolds to be used in tissue engineering (TE) applications, electrospun fibers are very promising alternatives that mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM) for cellular progression. However, this technique also has drawbacks such as jet instability, low productivity, the requirement of using specialized equipment, and high voltage besides environmental concerns related to use of organic solvents. Hence, new design strategies and additive manufacturing (AM) approaches are still needed that allow production of many different types of scaffolds as required and so, to precisely control the morphology and diameter of the produced three-dimensional (3D) materials. In this respect, this chapter provides the state of the art of electrospinning by categorizing it into melt electrospinning, solution electrospinning, centrifugal electrospinning, cryoelectrospinning, and near-field electrospinning from the aspects of TE.
Toxicology of nano-scale materials used in water treatment

In the last two decades, the use of nanomaterials has increased in food ingredient and packaging, water treatment, pesticides, cosmetics and many other industries. Old habits have begun to change in this process and silver nanoparticles instead of pesticides, carbon nanotubes absorbing pollutants in water treatment, titanium dioxide in smart drugs and cosmetics have become widespread. These nanoparticles, which permeate our lives in all areas, can hang in the air for kilometers and can cause DNA damage by penetrating people, animals and plant cells. Although the magnitude of the risks and the toxic effects are estimated, there are very few studies on this subject yet. Therefore, it is required to reveal the risks and toxic effects of nanomaterials, which are described as excellent technology. In this study, the toxicity of nano-scale materials, which are widely used in water treatment, and their effects on human and environmental health were investigated. Thus, the mechanism of action of the investigated nanomaterials was revealed.
Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis in temporal association with COVID-19 vaccine

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis is characterized by small, sterile, non-follicular, and sudden-onset pustular reactions on an erythematous surface. It typically involves intertriginous regions and the trunk and is usually accompanied by itching and a feeling of pain in the lesion areas. Often pharmacological treatments and frequent viral eruptions, including enterovirus, coxsackie, Epstein-Barr virus, and hepatitis B, play a role in the etiology of the disease. Case report: Here, we present the case of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis in a 17-year-old young woman triggered by the 1st dose of COVID19 mRNA BioNTech vaccine. Conclusions: We are reporting a rare case of vaccine-related acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, associated with a COVID-19 vaccination. © 2022 Termedia Publishing House Ltd.. Spatial diversity, patterns of forest vegetation, and sustainability analysis of the murree mountains of western himalayas

Murree Forest Division (MFD) is a part of western Himalayan range in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. An ecological field inventory was carried out. In all 454 vascular plants from 294 genera and 98 families were reported. The dominant families were Poaceae (54%, 53 spp.), Asteraceae (38%, 37 spp.), Papilionaceae, Lamiaceae, and Rosaceae (21%, 21 spp.), and Apocynaceae, Cyperaceae, and Ranunculaceae (12%, 12 spp.). The leading genera were Galium, Geranium, Rosa, and Swertia (six spp.) followed by Carex, Clematis, Quercus, and Ranunculus (five spp. each). There were 70 trees, 85 shrubs, and 299 herbs-climbers. Forest vegetation is under strong pressure. The plants in these forests are used for medicinal purposes, as wild fruits, vegetables, fuelwood, timber wood, fodder, roof thatching, agricultural tool making, fences/hedges, honeybee, and evil repellent evaluations. The vegetation is more affected by temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity and anthropogenic pressures. Forest structure has deteriorated due to poor regeneration potential. Continuous rise in temperature and other impacts can lead to eradication of endangered and endemic plants. The invasive plants are pushing upward the timberline. This study will enlighten these factors and possible recommendations.
