Towards a sociology of digital games: a critical exploration of an emerging field
(İnönü Üniversitesi, 2025) Sığın, Aykut
Digital games have become a key cultural phenomenon of the 21st century and have started influencing social dynamics worldwide. This study critically examines the emerging field of the sociology of digital games and takes digital games as a cultural economy, where cultural practices intersect with economic mechanisms. In this respect, digital games are situated as commodities that reflect and shape societal values, norms, and conflicts, extending beyond simple entertainment to construct identities, communicate cultural narratives, and foster social discourse. It is argued that the dominance of industry leaders in production and distribution perpetuates economic hierarchies, influencing accessibility, cultural engagement, and representation. The study purports that digital games often perpetuate capitalist ideals such as consumerism and meritocratic success, while also exploring their potential to subvert or challenge these ideologies. The study also analyzes the gender dynamics revolving around digital games and how virtual gaming communities influence social interaction. Studies on the intersection of digital games and social capital, cultural exchange, skill development, social norms and governance, identity and representation, addiction and well-being as well as blurring boundaries of physical and virtual worlds are seen as important study areas of this emerging subfield of sociology. The article concludes by calling for future research on the intersection of gaming with issues such as race, disability, and global inequality, attempting to outline key research areas in the field of the sociology of digital games. It is thought that the study will contribute to the literature by means of highlighting the most glaring social issues in the world of digital games.
Increasing number of vehicles and traffic accidents in Turkey: current situation and future predictions
(HÜSEYİN AKBULUT, 2025) Bolakar Tosun, Hümeyra
Statistics on road safety and traffic accidents show that the increasing number of vehicles causes a significant increase in the number of accidents. As a result of urbanization and population growth, the number of vehicles using the roads is increasing rapidly. This increase increases traffic congestion and therefore the risk of accidents, especially in big cities and heavy traffic areas. This study aims to comprehensively examine the effects of vehicle excess on traffic accidents and make predictions on possible future scenarios. Within the scope of the study, existing traffic data will be analyzed and changes in accident rates will be evaluated as the number of vehicles increases.
Classical Turkish poetry possesses profound richness and intellectual depth. The metaphors, symbols, imagery, and associations employed by poets in their verses open doors to diverse interpretations, leading readers into imaginative realms. One of the key concepts that offers insight into the poet’s persona and poetic identity is hüner (skill or talent). Haleti, a prominent 17th-century poet known for his rubai (quatrains), considered poetry a form of hüner, emphasizing the necessity of poetic mastery. In his poetry, Haleti establishes semantic connections between hüner and various concepts such as trees, hunting, gardens, sugar and honey, mills, the sea/diver, fields, treasures, commodities, assemblies, critics, light, schools, enchantresses (peri-han), and cities. He describes the skilled individual as one who is often envied, unrecognized, and subject to hardship, and notes that such individuals have become rare over time. Furthermore, he highlights their elevated status and the social prestige gained through proximity to them. Through these perspectives, Hâletî reflects on the broader notions of poetry and the poet It is also emphasized that the concepts of hüner and marifet in some verses are similar at some point and are not only used to express poetic views.
