Abstract
Chips are critical components for the automotive industry. In recent years, the automotive industry has faced a chip crisis with the effect of the Covid-19 epidemic. Chip shortage caused automotive manufacturers to suspend their activities and not be able to bring their new vehicle production to the desired level. As a result, it has become very difficult to find new vehicles in the market, the prices of new and used vehicles have increased. The aim of this study is investigating the causes of the chip crisis, which has become a global problem and has significant effects on country economies, its negative effects on the automotive industry and the measures to be taken to overcome the crisis. The document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. As a result of the study, compared with the data of the previous ten years, it has been determined that 2020 was the year in which the production and sales amount was at the lowest level in terms of the world automotive industry, and the year in which both automotive production and sales decreased the most in terms of Turkey. The best way to overcome the global chip crisis and reduce external dependency on chip is to support local chip design and manufacturing.
