Öğe Medicinal applications, chemical compositions, and biological effects of an algerian ocimum basilicum L.var genovese; with the conversion of experimental doses to humans(Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, 2022) Fedoul, Firdaous Faiza; Meddah, Boumediene; Larouci, Mohammed; Touil, Aicha Tir; Merazi, Yahya; Bekhti, Nabila; Piras, Alessandra; Falconieri, Danilo; Çakmak, Yavuz SelimThis paper aims to analyze the medicinal uses of Ocimum basilicum L.var Genovese (basil) in western Algeria and its effectiveness. Materials and Methods: For the experiments, 154 structured questionnaires were collected to list the medicinal uses of basil. The essential oil of O. basilicum (EOB) obtained by hydro-distillation was analyzed by the GC/MS. The ethanolic and aqueous extracts (EEB and AEB) were analyzed by HPLC. The antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH assays and the antimicrobial activity was measured against fiv e microbes. For the in vivo study, Swiss albinos mice were used to determine the toxicity using Lorke’s method. The anti-inflammatory activity was determined using the Carrageenan method. The experimental doses were converted from mice to humans using the Km factor. Results: The ethnobotanical study indicates that local people use basil to treat diseases and health problems (50% for i nflammation and 38.11% for microbial diseases). The results also show that EOB contains 41.3% linalool, whereas ethanolic extract contains benzoic a cid (50.86 mg/g). The IC50 value is 556, 878.7, and 962.3 µg/ml for EOB, EEB, and AEB, respectively. The EOB and AEB inhibit the positive Gram bacteria and yeast; the EEA inhibits the negative Gram. The LD50 is 400, 470, and >5000 mg/kg for AEB, EOB, and EEB respectively. The results of the anti-inflammatory test highlight 76.33, 71.0, and 60.43% inhibition of edema at a 100 mg/kg dose for EOB, AEB, and EEB, respectively. Conclusions: The Algerian basil can be considered as an antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.Öğe Phenolic composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of zizyphus lotus l. and ruta chalepensis l. growing in mascara (Western Algerıa)(Slovak University of Agriculture, 2021) Bekkar, Nour El Houda; Meddah, Boumediene; Çakmak, Yavuz Selim; Keskin, BahadırIn this study, the phenolic composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Zizyphus lotus and Ruta chalepensis collected from Mascara-Western Algeria were investigated. The total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents in the methanolic (Me.E) and aqueous (Aq.E) extracts were measured using colorimetric methods. Polyphenolic profiles were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), while the antioxidant effect was determined by DPPH* radical scavenging assays. The antimicrobial activity was estimated using agar disc diffusion and microdilution methods. The results showed that total phenolic compounds, flavonoids and tannins were significantly higher (p <0.05) in Z. lotus extracts when compared with R. chalepensis. The major phenolic compound detected in Z. lotus was benzoic acid (1333.59 µg/g DE), while the hydroxybenzoic acid (56.60 µg/g DE), chlorogenic acid (44.60 µg/g DE), epicatechin (38.80 µg/g DE), catechin (26.30 µg/g DE) and gallic acid (13.22 µg/g DE) were the major compounds in R. chalepensis. Both plants were determined to be effective antioxidants regarding their lower IC50 values of 0.146 mg/mL for Z. lotus Me.E and 0.206 mg/mL for R. chalepensis Aq.E. Results demonstrated that Me.E of Z. lotus and R. chalepensis were more active against S. enterica ssp arizonae, while the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration was recorded against H. alvei using Z. lotus aqueous extract (25 mg/mL). An important anti-Candida activity was also determined. These results suggest the most efficiency of both plants, in the treatment of various human infections, regarding their potential on bioactive molecules with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
