    An Assessment of Türkiye's Public Diplomacy Activities after the Johnson Letter: Are Cultural Relations an Investment

    ForT & uuml;rkiye, the year 1964 witnessed a significant break in its long-standing foreign policy approach. During this period, Turkish foreign policy, which was shaped around the Cyprus Issue, sought alternatives after the Johnson Letter. This study aims to examine various cultural activities carried out by T & uuml;rkiye in 1964 and evaluate them in the context of public diplomacy. In this direction, firstly, the international political atmosphere of the 1960s was evaluated from the perspective ofT & uuml;rkiye. Later, sections ofT & uuml;rkiye's important public diplomacy activities in different fields in the period from 1920s to the Johnson Letter were revealed. Finally, the report on cultural relations published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1964 was examined by documentary scanning method, and in this context, various public diplomacy initiatives were put forward in which the Cyprus Issue was at the center. As a result of the study, it has been understood that T & uuml;rkiye invests in cultural and artistic activities in accordance with its political objectives within the scope of the maximum benefit strategy with minimum cost and makes positive contributions to the image of the country.

    Kapitalizmin Gölgesinde Geleneksel ve Modern Toplum Tasviri: ‘Asteriks: Roma Sitesi’ Üzerine Bir İnceleme

    Bu çalışmada 2014 yılında vizyona giren Asteriks: Roma Sitesi adlı animasyon filminde geleneksel ve modern toplumun nasıl tasvir edildiği ile kapitalizmin etkisiyle geleneksel toplumun modern topluma nasıl evrildiği sorularına sosyolojik film eleştirisinin imkanlarından yararlanılarak yanıt bulunması amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda, geleneksel toplumun doğayla iç içe, nüfusu az ve birbirlerini tanıyan insanlardan oluşan, geçimlik ekonominin ve sabit toplumsal rollerin geçerli olduğu bir yapı olarak tasvir edildiği anlaşılmıştır. Modern toplumun ise kalabalık kentlerde yaşayan, tüketimin belirleyici olduğu kapitalist ekonomik ilişkilere sahip, toplumsal hareketliliğin fazla olduğu ve son derece hızlı yaşanan bir yapı olarak betimlendiği görülmüştür. Ayrıca, geleneksel bir toplumun kapitalist ekonomik ilişkilerin geçerli olduğu kent merkezli modern topluma karşı direnebilmesinin zor olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

    The influence of Turkish TV series on generation Z in South Africa: An exploratory study

    The worldwide popularity of Turkish TV series has been steadily growing.TV series, which became increasingly popular in geographies close to T & uuml;rkiye, especially in the early 2000s, reached a worldwide reputation in the following years, and this success made positive contributions to public opinion about T & uuml;rkiye. This study examines the popularity of Turkish TV series around the world and T & uuml;rkiye's relations with South Africa within the framework of T & uuml;rkiye's changing African policies in the last quarter century. The aim of the study is to investigate whether Generation Z in South Africa watches Turkish TV series, to determine which series are popular among them, to determine how their perception of T & uuml;rkiye changes after watching these series, and to contribute to the academic literature on T & uuml;rkiye's soft power in South Africa. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with audiences from various ethnic groups and genders living in different cities in South Africa. The study clearly showed that the participants generally had positive impressions about T & uuml;rkiye's culture, nature, fashion and people through Turkish TV series. Moreover, many expressed a desire to visit T & uuml;rkiye based on information from Turkish TV series, indicating a positive change in perceptions among Generation Z in South Africa.
