Pd@SA/β-CD/Fe3O4: Pd nanoparticles on sodium alginate hydrogel beads reinforced with β-cyclodextrin and Fe3O4 particles for effective reductive elimination of organic pollutants
(Elsevier B.V., 2025) Elhüseyni, Rukiye; Çalışkan, Melike; Yılmaz Baran, Nuray; Baran, Talat
The increased use of toxic organic pollutants, such as organic dyes and nitroaromatics, in various industrial applications has led to their leak into wastewater. The inability to remove these toxic pollutants, which are non-biodegradable and stable, from wastewater poses a threat to many living organisms, from human health to the environment. Therefore, the effective removal of these pollutants from water/wastewater is crucial. In this study, we designed heterogeneous catalyst system composed of palladium nanoparticles decorated on sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel beads reinforced with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and Fe3O4 for the catalytic elimination of organic dyes (methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (RhB)) and nitroaromatics (p-nitro-o-phenylenediamine (p-NPDA), (p-nitroaniline (p-NA), p-nitrophenol (p-NP), and o-nitroaniline (o-NA)). Morphological and structural confirmation of Pd@SA/β-CD/Fe3O4 was conducted using TEM, FE-SEM, FT-IR, EDS, BET, TG, and XRD analyses. FE-SEM and TEM analyses confirmed that the prepared Pd NPs had a spherical shape with a particle size of 10 nm, while EDS, BET, TG, FT-IR, and XRD analyses confirmed their magnetic properties and chemical structure. The catalytic capability of Pd@SA/β-CD/Fe3O4 was then evaluated for the reduction of MO, MB, RhB, p-NA, p-NP, o-NA, and p-NPDA using NaBH4, and the reductions were monitored by UV–Vis analyses. Pd@SA/β-CD/Fe3O4 with 10 nm particle size served as an effective nanocatalyst, facilitating the reduction of these contaminants within a short reaction time (0–105 s). Kinetic studies were conducted, and the rate constants (k) were determined as 0.009 s−1 for p-NP, 0.022 s−1 for o-NA, 0.012 s−1 for p-NPDA, 0.018 s−1 for p-NA, 0.054 s−1 for RhB, and 0.01 s−1 for MO. Thanks to its magnetic nature, Pd@SA/β-CD/Fe3O4 was easily recovered and reused up to six cycles, affirming its potential as a practical, economical, and sustainable catalyst. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
The role of glutamine in growth, health and sensory quality of female rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss)
(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2025) Öz, Mustafa; İnanan, Burak Evren
This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary glutamine supplementation on growth performance, haematological and biochemical responses, oxidative stress parameters and sensory quality of fillets in female rainbow trout. Methodology: A total of 360 female rainbow trout were randomly divided into four groups and fed diets supplemented with 0.0% (control), 0.5%, 1.5% and 2.0% glutamine for 60 days. Growth indices were measured, and blood samples were analysed for haematological and biochemical parameters. Muscle tissue was examined for oxidative stress markers. Sensory evaluation was performed on fillets by trained panellist. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple comparison test. Results: Glutamine supplementation at 1.5% and 2.0% significantly improved final body weight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05). Haematological indices, such as red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin and haematocrit levels, increased in the treated groups. Significant enhancements in total protein and albumin levels were observed, along with reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, indicating improved oxidative status. Sensory evaluation revealed better odour, flavour and texture in fillets from glutamine-supplemented groups, particularly at 1.5% and 2.0% inclusion levels. Conclusions: Dietary glutamine supplementation, particularly at 1.5%–2.0%, enhances growth, physiological health, oxidative balance and sensory characteristics in female rainbow trout. These findings support the practical use of glutamine as a functional feed additive in sustainable aquaculture systems.
Evaluating the efficacy and benefits of vNOTES for ovarian cystectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2025) Kaya, Cihan; Aktoz, Fatih; Güneş, Ali Can; Tercan, Can; Saçıntı, Koray Görkem; Yassa, Murat; AlAli, Hussein
This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness and overall outcomes of vNOTES in ovarian cystectomy compared to conventional laparoscopy (CL). Study design: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by searching PubMed/MEDLINE, EBSCO, Cochrane, and Embase databases for studies comparing vNOTES and laparoscopy for ovarian cystectomy. A comprehensive literature search was performed to identify relevant publications up to June 21, 2024. The search strategy utilized a combination of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and relevant keywords. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and case-control studies, while case reports and studies lacking a direct comparison were excluded. Two independent reviewers assessed study eligibility and performed Risk of Bias evaluation. Quantitative synthesis was performed using meta-analysis techniques. The protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42024560612). Results: Six studies reported operative times, with vNOTES showing a significantly shorter duration compared to CL (mean difference [MD]: −13.05 min, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: −19.04 to −7.07, I2 = 67 %). Five studies demonstrated that vNOTES was associated with shorter hospital stays (MD: −0.43 days, 95 % CI: −0.74 to −0.12, I2 = 90 %). Pain scores were also significantly lower in vNOTES patients (3 studies, MD: −1.25, 95 % CI: −1.49 to −1.01, I2 = 43 %). However, no significant differences were observed between the groups regarding hemoglobin drop, blood loss, or conversion rates. Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis highlight the advantages of vNOTES ovarian cystectomy, including reduced operative times, faster recovery, lower postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stays. These findings support the wider adoption of vNOTES as an effective alternative to conventional laparoscopy for ovarian cystectomy, offering potential benefits for both patients and surgical efficiency.
Some predictive ındexes are potentially promising clinical parameters in dogs with primary cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis
(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2025) Çolakoğlu, Ekrem Çağatay; Aydemir, Melek; Sevim, Kadir; Haydardedeoğlu, Ali Evren; Kaya, Ufuk
The invasive nature of liver biopsy and the risk of complications make patients reluctant to undergo the procedure. This situation has necessitated the search for easily accessible haematological indexes such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red cell distribution width to lymphocyte ratio (RDW/LYM) to contribute to the clinical diagnosis and prognosis evaluation processes in dogs with cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis. Objectives: The aim of the study is to evaluate some predictive markers to contribute the clinical diagnosis in dogs with cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis. Medhods: Seventeen client-owned dogs with cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis were randomly allocated. Nine clinically healthy dogs (control group) confirmed with clinical examination, complete blood count (CBC) and serum profiles were used. Cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis was diagnosed in dogs with dilated bile ducts, thickened gallbladder wall up to 4 mm and increased parenchymal echogenicity. Clinical procedures including clinical examination, blood analyses and diagnostic abdominal ultrasonography were performed in all dogs. CBC indices such as NLR, mean platelet volume to platelet ratio (MPV/PLT), red cell distribution width to platelet ratio (RDW/PLT), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and RDW/LYM were calculated using absolute CBC values. Results: A final total of 10 dogs were enrolled in the study. NLR and RDW/LYM ratios were significantly higher (p < 00.5) in dogs with cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis compared to healthy ones. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the use of NLR and RDW/LYM ratio in dogs with cholangitis-cholangiohepatitis complex appears potentially promising. Larger prospective, case-control studies are needed to further evaluate these findings. Veterinary practitioners can obtain valuable diagnostic data before possible invasive liver procedures by evaluating NLR and RDW/LYM ratios, which are easily obtained from CBC parameters.

(Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 2025) Başar Kılıç, Şeyma; Kulu, Huzeyfe; Salman, Hüseyin; Bektaş, Murat
Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic immune-mediated disease that affects the skin and nails. Several screening tools such as psoriasis epidemiology screening tool, psoriatic arthritis screening and evaluation, early arthritis for psoriatic patients (EARP), STRIPP, SIPAS, and TOPAS have been developed and validated for identifying patients with suspected psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in dermatology clinics. Herein, we aim to validate and evaluate the performance of TurPAS in patients with PsO compared to the EARP questionnaire. This cross-sectional study was carried out in collaboration between dermatology and rheumatology clinics at Aksaray University Hospital, a tertiary referral center. All patients were examined for dermatologic aspects in the dermatology outpatient clinic and TurPAS and EARP questionnaires were performed by the same dermatologist. The patients who met the CASPAR criteria were classified as PsA in addition to appropriate clinical findings. In our study, 119 patients (n=72; 60.5% female) with PsO were included. Mean±standard deviation age of the patients was 44.9±14.3 (range; 18-83) years and the median (IQR) PsO duration was 10 (14) years. Median (IQR) TurPAS and EARP scores were 2 (3) and 3 (5), respectively. Overall, 39 patients (32.8%) met the CASPAR criteria and were classified as PsA. The best diagnostic accuracy was observed in≥3 positive items with 82% and 70% sensitivity and specificity (positive predictive value: 57.1%, negative predictive value: 89%, likelihood ratio: 2.7, diagnostic accuracy: 74%) for TurPAS and≥4 items with 74.4% and 86.3% (positive predictive value: 72.5%, negative predictive value: 87.3%, likelihood ratio: 5.4, diagnostic accuracy: 82.4%) for EARP. In our study, approximately one-third of patients with PsO were diagnosed as PsA. TurPAS had acceptable diagnostic performance compared to the EARP questionnaire. © 2025 the Author(s).
